Keeping Your animals Healthy and Happy Without Overspending

Hello, my name is Catherine. I have long loved animals and have had several of my own over the years. Sadly, I saw two of my cats suffer with feline cancer, one of my dogs had arthritis, and, of course, we faced the usual calamities and injuries pets often face. However, I have had to navigate this on a relatively restricted budget, and through the years, I have gotten quite proficient at that. I work at a library and love doing research on pets and veterinary care as well as a range of other topics. I also love to write so decided to put my info in a blog. Please, explore and enjoy!

5 Benefits Of Puppy Preschool

Ellen Lampi

Beginning training when your pup is still young can curtail behavioural challenges before they have a chance to develop. Puppy preschool programs are designed for dogs that aren't quite old enough for an intensive training program, so they are typically recommended for pups that are less than four months old.

1. Early Socialisation

One of the best reasons to consider puppy preschool is for early socialisation, especially if you don't have other dogs or pets at home. Being around other puppies gives your dog a chance to learn how to play with others without becoming agitated or aggressive. A dog trainer is on hand to help redirect the pups' excitement so that they learn to socialise appropriately.

2. Enrichment Strategies

Bored puppies can become destructive, tearing up clothing, furniture and even walls. Boredom can also lead to anxiety and related behaviour issues. At puppy preschool, your dog will be introduced to a variety of enrichment activities. Your pup will learn to only chew on chew toys or on puzzle toys that dispense treats. You may also learn games that will help your puppy burn off excess energy in healthy ways.

3. Basic Training

Even young dogs can begin to learn basic commands. Commands like "stop" and "drop it" can save a pup's life in a dangerous situation, so they are especially important for young dogs to learn. "Sit," "come," and "wait" are other important early commands for your pup. Learning the basics early will make future dog training sessions easier for both you and your dog as they get older.

4. Toilet Training

One of the biggest challenges with a puppy is proper housebreaking. Some pups are quick to understand proper toilet habits, while others need a bit more time and assistance. At a puppy preschool you can learn new techniques, such as kennelling and puppy mat use, to complement your toilet training objectives.

5. Problem Intervention

Many behavioural problems in adult dogs took root when they were puppies. Intervention right when the issue begins can prevent a lot of frustration later on. At puppy preschool, a trainer can help you develop strategies to put an end to problems like chewing, aggression towards people and other animals and barking and growling at inappropriate times. You can also learn strategies to help your pup cope with issues like separation anxiety.
